Full Time Employment – Experiencing a Comeback

Full Time employment – experiencing a comeback

Regarding full time employment, did you read the article by Peter Switzer headlined “forgive this media for they know not what they do”? In recent times I have been talking about the positive future for Australia in general and the Central Highlands in particular. Yet the media in Australia are going out of their way to focus on the negative and ignore the positive. Media outlets and their employees rely on advertising to pay their way. It makes no sense to create false headlines that undermine confidence. This only contributes to an economic downturn that hurts the businesses that pay for advertising. They shoot themselves in the foot.

Facts to dispute their negativity

Let’s take Australia in general. Last week’s figures showed Australia experienced the biggest full-time employment gains in 29 years! CBA Senior Economist, Gareth Aird said: “We are seeing a trend of about three or four months showing that this comeback for full-time jobs is for real.” Craig James from CommSec said, “Some people had fretted that there was a lack of full-time jobs. Others said that they wanted to work more hours but the offers weren’t there. Well in the space of a couple of months, those concerns have been knocked on their heads. Over the past two months, 115,400 full-time jobs have been created – the biggest back-to-back job gain in 29 years (since January 1988). And annual growth in the number of hours worked is the strongest for over seven years.”

The figures

  • Full Time Employment - Experiencing a Comeback Steve Taylor & PartnersEmployment rose by 14,000 in June, after rising by 38,000 in May.
  • Full-time jobs rose by 62,000, while part-time jobs fell by 48,000.
  • Full-time jobs lifted by 115,400 positions in the past two months – the strongest back-to-back job gain in 29 years.
  • Hours worked rose by 0.5% in June and were up by 3.3% over the year — the strongest annual growth for over six years.

What’s not to like about that? Whining and being negative when the economic data tells a different story; doesn’t make sense.
